The Story Behind the Name
The name G.O.A.T Coffee Trader comes from Ethiopian lore, where people noticed the energizing effects of coffee beans on goats once they ate the beans. This inspired the idea of serving coffee to people for a similar result. Goats then symbolize a conveyor that brings people and coffee together. Besides, G.O.A.T stands for ‘the greatest of all time’. These notions are in line with our company’s mission to bring high-quality coffee beans into the cup of every enjoyer around the world.
The Background and Importance of Recognizing Local Farmers in Northern Thailand
The northern regions of Thailand, especially Chiang Mai, are known for their ongoing problems with wildfires and health-threatening air pollution caused by wildfires and agriculture related activities. In the past, setting fire in the wild was believed to speed up plant and mushroom growth. Nowadays, this practice is still used by some local people. As vast areas of the mountains have become cornfields for livestock feed, the practice of dried cornstalk burning has increased due to its convenience and efficiency in preparing the soil for the next farming season. Those above causes are the main reason leading to severe air quality damage.
As a coffee trader, we focus on ethically sourcing coffee beans from local farms in the highlands. We prioritize beans that are grown under local forest shade, which prevent the coffee cherries from bearing fruit and ripening too quickly. It also allows the coffee plants to fully absorb minerals from the soil, resulting in coffee with diverse flavor profiles. Our coffee processing is the outcome of the locals’ cooperation in hand-harvesting and bean selection with minimal machine use which can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions. This tradition leads to sustainable environmental practices, and minimizes ecological impact.
Through our company, customers can support the preservation of green areas and reduce forest fires by encouraging local farmers to grow coffee instead of corn. Therefore, this cultivation not only provides sustainable income for farmers but also contributes to forest conservation as coffee plants need the shade of large trees to develop complex flavors. Unlike other crops, coffee does not require burning to prepare the soil for the new season, which helps reduce air pollution issues in Thailand’s northern regions. Apart from that, we provide the farmers with sales channels to export their products internationally, allowing them to focus on the quality of their coffee beans without concerns about access to markets.
We highly appreciate small farmers’ dedication to growing and caring for exceptional coffee. In recognition of their hard work, we established G.O.A.T Coffee Trader to present the characteristics of Thai coffee beans and to support local farmers, especially from the northern regions such as Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, and Uttaradit. These regions produce the majority of Thailand’s Arabica beans and directly experience air pollution impacts more than other parts of the country. For this reason, we promise to deliver carefully selected coffee beans to all our customers.
